We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”
— John F. Kennedy

As businesses continue to limit operations while still trying to serve the public, now more than ever we have to do our part to support our local businesses and community. Furthermore, if you’re a business owner, now is the perfect time to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to your social media followers who have supported, recommended, and patronized throughout the pandemic. While the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is far from over, extending gratitude to those who have supported you will go a long way and cultivate an even deeper relationship with your followers.

Thanksgiving month is the perfect time of year to really think about your fans and show appreciation. Here are some ideas to help get you started.

Acknowledge your fanbase: Did you recently have a great review on YELP or a customer who shared a positive post about their experience on Facebook, checked into your location, or tagged a product or meal? If so, don’t let the opportunity to acknowledge them go to waste! You can send direct messages or give a public shout-out to recognize and thank your fan, but make sure you include the fan’s name and be clear about why you’re thanking them or why you think they’re so great. Posting a public “thank you” note has an added benefit. Your other followers will see you as someone who cares about their fans, and that’s a great impression to make.

Sharing is caring:
Not only is it important to thank your fanbase but cross-promoting and acknowledging other local businesses will benefit you both. How? Sharing! If you see a local business share a product you love on Facebook, share it with your own fanbase. Likewise, if you see a local business share a post of yours, publicly thank them on your page. Here’s an example: Thank you Delafield Small Animal Hospital for following us and sharing our Happy National Puppy Day photo! We agree. There’s really no such thing as sharing too many happy puppy pics.

Fan of the week:
Hit all the feels by “shouting out” a fan of the week. People love to see their name announced and it’s a great fan engagement tactic because the post will likely be shared. Try #FeatureFriday for a fun twist and long-term post idea. You can recognize them publicly on your page or even offer a special discount or prize for an extra incentive. Many businesses are also recognizing top fans through badges, here’s how to turn the feature on.

Top fan badges for your Page on or off:

  • From your News Feed, click Pages in the left menu.
  • Go to your Page.
  • Click Settings in the top right.
  • From the left, click Facebook Badges.
  • Click next to Turn on Top Fan Badges.

Reaching milestones:
If you recently reached a goal number on one of your social channels this is a great way to “shout out” your fans publicly. “Thank you for helping us reach 1,000 likes on Facebook! We appreciate all of you and wouldn’t be here today without your support!” Consider an added bonus of offering a discount or promotion to tie into the achievement.
